Our waiter at breakfast recently while traveling in Seattle was a Mexican immigrant who in the course of serving us coffee revealed that he was fluent in five languages and sign language.  When we asked if it was American Sign Language as our daughter is learning he replied, “I know three, American, Mexican and Cuban Sign Language”  We asked how?!…as he was being frowned at and hurried along by his boss.. “because I lived with the deaf for a while”  I wanted him to pull up a chair and sit for hours.  This desire happens to me almost daily with people I meet, even briefly.

I don’t think I’m alone when I say I have never had an easy answer to “And what do you do?”  Therefore it’s been easy to be misunderstood underestimated dismissed and assumed to fit into some tidy outdated role.  I believe most lives amount to more than that.  They amount to things worth sharing, things worth preserving. Just after writing this my Mom approached me with a giant box of photos, some treasures. “I don’t know what to do with these” How many of us feel that way? We have a solution.
